Spain’s rail infrastructure manager Adif awarded a EUR 22.3 million contract to Constructora San José for the construction of the new Lugo station and the urbanisation of its immediate surroundings in the area of Plaza Conde Fontao-Rúa Alta and Parque del Sagrado Corazón.

The project includes the construction of a new passenger building, a new underpass, the adaptation of platforms and construction of canopies, the urbanisation of the surroundings of the new station, the demolition of the Post Office building, an underpass between platforms for the exclusive use of passengers and the remodeling of the road and road accesses in the Plaza Conde Fontao – Rúa Alta area. The passenger building will be integrated into the intermodal plaza, which will connect the railway and bus stations. A new underpass will also be built, intended for communication between platforms, exclusively for railway users, and an urban pedestrian crossing, which will allow transversal connection, saving the railway route between the urban centre and the Sagrado Corazón park.

The station will also benefit from a bike lane and ramps integrated into a garden environment that will make it accessible and integrated into the urban space. In this way, both sides of the railway channel will be connected, including its accesses, vertical communication elements and the associated urbanisation. Its execution will be coordinated with the rest of the administrations.

20 bidders submitted their offer for the contract to build the new Lugo station and the development of an intermodal transport area and its surroundings, a project which is implemented by Adif in collaboration with the government of the autonomous community of Galicia, Xunta de Galicia, and the City Council of Lugo.

Adif will carry out the development of the exterior of the station and the connection of the urban pedestrian crossing with the surroundings in the area of Plaza Conde Fontao-Rúa Alta and Parque del Sagrado Corazón, acting with environmental sustainability criteria. In turn, it will adapt the enclosure of the station to prevent improper access to the area of tracks and platforms and will carry out the remodeling of the road and road accesses in the Plaza Conde Fontao-Rúa Alta area.

The Xunta de Galicia will be responsible for the construction of the bus station and a new underground car park, which will double the current number of spaces, the facility being designed by Adif.

Adif will finance the entire investment including the new passenger building at the railway station, 60% of the urban pedestrian crossing, the urbanisaation of the immediate surroundings of the action and the remodeling of the road and road accesses and 62.5% of theunderground parking under the new bus station. The Xunta de Galicia will assume 100% of the new bus station and 37.5% of the new underground parking. The City Council of Lugo will finance 40% of the urban layout actions including the  underpass, urbanisation of the surrounding area and remodeling of the road and road accesses.

The new train station will respond to the increase in train and passenger traffic derived from the modernisation and electrification of the 117 km Lugo – Ourense line. In November 2022, Adif launcged electrifiation works on a 45 km section of the line between Ourense and Monforte, which will be followed by the electrification of Monforte de Lemos – Lugo section to complete the entire project.

The modernisation of Ourense – Monforte de Lemos – Lugo railway line will provide rapid, comfortable and efficient transport services, reducing the journey time. The project is estimated at EUR 550 million and is implemented with funds from the European Union-Next GenerationEU.

This Ourense – Lugo railway line provides the connection of the city to the high-speed rail network through the Madrid – Galicia high-speed corridor inaugurated in December 2021. The high-speed railway line has a length of 120 km and runs through 31 tunnels and 32 viaducts.
